MohdZaki b MohdZainal, 4th year, Material Engineering

Who could guess that a competition per se could changes a person’s life? This is a story of the person that had gone through the changed.
For any Nasyid enthusiast, songs like ‘BuatmuIbu’, ‘Guruku’ and ‘SentuhanKejayaan’is not anymore strange for them. These are among the popular songs by the Madani, a band gathered by one of the IIUM student since year 2000. It was formed initially for a competition but they decide to stay in-group until today. Thanks to that, they are today one of the famous Nasyidband in the country.
One member of the band is MohdZaki b MohdZainal. Looking from his appearance I never expected that he is actually a nasyid singer. He is very active in basketball and his appearance suit a basketball player really well. He is even won third place in the recent basketball tournament of Non-Chinese Basketball League Malaysia 2009. However, like the old saying ‘ Don’t judge a book by its cover’.
Despite his persona, he is actually very talented in art. He could compose songs, sing, plays guitar as well as keyboard. Other than that, he is also good in mechanical. Registered as IIUM students in 2004, he takes Material Engineering as his major.
Asking about his time management, he said that his work and activity do not bother his study at all. In fact, it helps him gaining more confident during study and also assist him in managing his time efficiently.
The other members of the band are also University student, 2 of them are from IIUM, another 2 are from Uitm and 1 is from UTM. Even though all of them are Engineering student, surprisingly, they are really good in music. 2 persons responsible for their music career nowadays are Pn. Bariah and his husband En. Sumiyami. They are the one that guide them since the initial form of the group.
After graduation in 1 more year and he is aiming to expand their band’s reach outside Malaysia. Other than that, he is also planning to collaborate with International artist and making their band’s name heard throughout Malaysia.
For the time being, his band is still independent and does not fall under any mainstream label. They opened their own company in 2007 to manage their band and funding for their performance and album production. By using the same name as their band, Madani Creativeexpands the band creativity into teaching nasyid classes and producing songs and lyrics.
Ending the interview session, I suddenly thought of one phrase from a movie, ‘There is always a first time for everything’.

Books and student are synonyms. Students have to read books and some of them choose to write them for others to use. New author is born everyday, and some of them are really young. There are even as young as 7 years old. To be an author is not an ambition, it’s actually a passion. Most of the authors are gifted with the talent, however anyone could be an author, as long as he put his effort in it.
Likewise, MohdAliff b Mohd Nor. He was born in 1986 and started his first education as a student in SekolahKebangsaanDamansaraUtama and continues at SekolahMenengahKebangsaanDamansaraUtama after that. In 2004, after SPM, he entered the IIUM matriculation center by taking Bachelor of English and Literature.  2years doing foundation in matriculation center, he then, continue his study at Main Campus of IIUM in Gombak. 1 year studied in Benl, he then changed his course to Bachelor of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences and majoring in Communication.
His interest in writing is actually just beginning to shine when he entered the main campus of IIUM. Before that, he had never thinking of writing, what more to write a book. He said that,
‘ The passion is actually started from the needs of money, however the motivation gradually changed to provide and share knowledge for those who needed’.
The first book he had written is ‘Perisik Kota Saba’ and the PTS Publication Sdn. Bhd published it in the early of 2009. The book contents stories of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) and Sahabat. It’s a good start for him and he is now still writing for his third book and the second book is coming early next year.
He said that the person inspired him to write was his mother. ‘ Everything that I’m now is my mother’s’. His mother is a single mother, and she is the one who worked hard since the past 12 years. He likes to help ease the burden of his mother and that is why he forces himself to complete his books.

MohdAkmal bin Ahmad, 4th year, Computer Engineering

Was a student from a religious school in Perlis, MohdAkmal bin Ahmad, spread his wing to IIUM to further his study in Engineering. He takes Computer Engineering as his major and intends to create software on his own in the next future.
Registered as IIUM student in 2004, he is now at the end of his 4 years study, and early this year, he was assigned to do his internship at UNIMAP Perlis as a software engineer in its research and development center.
There are a lot of stories and great experiences that he had experienced during the internship and due to that he has also some do and don’t advise to those who are going to do internship next time.
The place selected for him by far is the best; he said that he could have. Working and internship is two different things. Mostly, those who do internship are not getting paid. Due to that, he decide to accept UNIMAP, because it is near to his house, therefore he doesn’t need to waste money on house rent and meal.
Other than that, before he went to the internship, he had done research through journal, interviews, and Internet. This is to make sure that, he had everything’s well prepared.
He said that there are also major differences between his class and internship. Even though, the internship and the course that he takes is interrelated, but the internship offers in-depth knowledge about the things that he had studied. Internship also is beneficial for his study because its help him understand more on the subject.
At the end of his internship, he is able to complete one project and surprisingly, his project was awarded Silver Award by his supervisor. He is really happy with it and also recommends UNIMAP as one of the option for the student to think when choosing place to do internship. The pay is not much, but the experience and knowledge is priceless.
